Simon de Vos (20 October 1603, Antwerp – 15 October 1676, Antwerp) was a painter and draughtsman. He began his career making small-format paintings of genre scenes, particularly of Caravaggist merry companies. He later turned to history painting, working in larger formats in a Flemish Baroque style that was influenced by Rubens and van Dyck. His paintings are held in private collections and in several museums of international prominence.
Religious scene of The Passion of Christ depicting the capture and torture of Christ, surrounded by multiple figures of Roman soldiers, civilian figures and two dogs, in a nocturnal setting of an outdoor landscape with a bridge and a view of the city in perspective.
Signed and dated at the bottom left: “S. D. Vos in et F. 1641”. On the back of the copper, an old and original 19th century transport label from the Spanish Railways.
Gilded 19th century frame. Good condition.
